In General, Retail Thoughts on March 2, 2010 at 11:23 pm

A couple of days ago iTunes topped the 10 BILLION number in songs sold…10,000,000,000 songs. Simply amazing.

iTunes, iPods and online file sharing have changed retail forever. The record store is, generally, a thing of the past. Ask an 18-year-old if they’ve ever bought a CD. Ask if s/he owns one. While Bob Dylan and Paul McCartney CDs may still be flying off the racks at Starbucks – one of the top music retailers (physical sales) in the country right now – CD’s are a thing of a past. DVDs are headed in that direction too.

Apple, the largest digital-only music retailer in the world, became the number one music retailer in the US in 2008.  The only real estate iTunes needs is some office and server space. So much for the CD store in Kendall.

*I’ll leave a discussion of the Apple Store for a future post.  Stay tuned.
