New Haven, Part II

In Retail Thoughts on March 18, 2010 at 10:56 am

As discussed in my prior entry, part of the reason I headed to New Haven on Tuesday was to meet with the Blue State Coffee team.

BSC is an extraordinary business. It’s the brainchild of Drew and Marshall Ruben. 5% of sales go to charity; charities selected by customers. If you know retail you know that 5% off the top is a lot. $150,000 has been given to charity since BSC launched. Blue State is about “sustainable capitalism.” It uses all compostable products and sources food from local distributors. Blue State talks the talk and walks the walk.  First location is in New Haven and two subsequent cafes in Providence.

CityRetail is delighted to be working with BSC as its retail advisor and broker in the Boston/Cambridge market; goal being to roll-out a handful of locations in the next 18 months. This is precisely the type of tenant representation project we are looking for – motivated and competent operators with a scalable and socially responsible concept.
